Portland Community College’s ABA approved paralegal program* seeks to support students’ successful completion of a paralegal credential by delivering quality legal education focused on practical skills in a challenging, inclusive, and supportive environment. As the oldest and largest program in the state, we are able to offer students a core of fundamental classes and plenty of electives. Our curriculum focuses on practical paralegal skills in each class. Classes are virtual, either asynchronous or with a zoom component each week. Our alumni work throughout the state and the world supporting legal services in a wide variety of subject matter. Alumni work in every size and culture of legal employer, from small casual offices to white shoe firms. Graduates also pursue alternative careers for which a legal education is helpful. The future of paralegal careers is bright, with new opportunities available for experienced paralegals to become Licensed Paralegals who can practice a limited scope of law directly for clients. *PCC also has a Legal Assistant Less-Than-One-Year Career Pathway Certificate in Legal Assisting. This element of the program is not ABA approved because the ABA does not approve short-term certificates that do not lead to preparation for paralegal roles. The program focuses on office and technology skills with sufficient legal background to give our Legal Assistant graduates a solid foundation from which to grow as legal professionals.
